UNCCD high official to visit Uzbekistan in late April

TASHKENT, April 9 (TCA) — The Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Luc Gnacadja is scheduled to start his three-day visit to Uzbekistan on April 30, UzDaily reported.
Gnacadja will take part in the roundtable, which will discuss measures on fighting desertification, land degradation, land improvement and water supply in Uzbekistan. The meeting will be also attended by officials of Uzgidromet (Uzbek Hydro Metrology), Ministry of Agriculture and Water Management, Irrigation Fund, and others.
According to Trend News, the UNCCD official will also meet in Samarkand with members of the Uzbek Research Institute of Karakul Sheep Breeding and Desert Ecology to discuss pasture management.
The UNCCD came into force in 1996 and has been ratified by 195 countries. Uzbekistan was one of the first countries, which signed and ratified the convention (31 October 1995).
