BISHKEK (TCA) — The year 2015 is most likely to go into history as the year when geopolitics from Dublin to Shanghai underwent drastic changes. For Central Asia’s former Soviet republics, it means that the markets to sell the commodities on which their economies remain heavily dependent have shifted dramatically, and the years of making easy money on them have passed and are unlikely to return. Monetary turmoil related to it has put non-commodity sectors of the economy at risk, while war looming on the region’s southern frontiers threatens to thwart the already precarious attempts to save the exposed economies. In the case of Turkmenistan, boosting gas exports seems the only way to survive – even though gas is cheap and investments are expensive.
