ASTANA -- April 20 -- (kazinform.kz) - In Vienna, staff of the Kazakhstan's embassy and military attaché office along with colleagues from the CIS countries attended the annual memorial ceremony marking the anniversary of the liberation of Austria from Nazi rule.
Wreath-laying ceremony is traditionally held at the memorial to fallen Soviet soldiers on Schwarzenberg Square in Vienna, the press service of the Kazakh MFA said.
The losses of the Soviet Army during the Vienna offensive operation carried out from March 16 to April 15, 1945, amounted to more than 100,000 people. During the liberation events many historical and architectural attractions were saved from the bombing and destruction.
The monument to Soviet soldiers was erected in Vienna in 1945 and represents a symbol of liberation from the Nazis. The authors of the memorial are sculptor M.Intezaryan and architect S.Yakovlev.
The memorial is under international legal protection.
