DUSHANBE, October 29 (TCA) — On Saturday, the Tajik President Emomali Rahmon visited the opening ceremony of the tunnel under the Shakhristan pass on the 180th km of Dushanbe-Chanak road, linking the Tajik capital with northern provinces, Asia-Plus reported.
In his speech, the President said that “this road will give a new impetus to trade relations of Tajikistan with all Central Asian states: China, Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan and will decrease prices for imported goods.”
According to his words, the tunnel will shorten time of the travel from the south to northern parts of the country from 15 hours to 4 hours.
The length of the tunnel is 5.253 meters. This is the longest tunnel in the country. Its cost is estimated at $90.3 million.
Construction of the tunnel started in August 2006. It is a part of rehabilitation of Dushanbe-Chanak road valued at over $300 million. The tunnel was built by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC).
“Opening of the Shakhristan tunnel will ensure road connection between all regions of the country and partial revival of the Great Silk Road,” the President said in his remarks.
